The Saborea Lanzarote Festival: A Culinary Benchmark for Sustainable Gastronomy

The Saborea Lanzarote Festival has firmly established itself as a premier culinary event in Spain, successfully blending the vibrant flavors of the Canary Islands with the diverse gastronomic landscape of the Saborea España network. The recent 11th edition, held in the historic center of La Villa de Teguise, was not just a celebration of food and wine, but a powerful reaffirmation of a deep commitment to sustainability, innovation, and local excellence.

🍽️ A Short History of Saborea Lanzarote

While the recent edition marked the 11th year of this highly successful event, the Saborea Lanzarote Festival has its roots in the island’s long-standing tradition of valuing its unique, volcanic-born produce. Born from an initiative to showcase Lanzarote’s exceptional local products—from its distinctive Malvasía Volcánica wines to its exquisite Majorero goat cheese—the festival has grown exponentially. Over the past decade, it has evolved into an international benchmark, consistently driving gastronomic tourism and fostering a community committed to the shared values of sustainability, proximity, and culinary excellence, in collaboration with national entities like Saborea España.

🏆 11th Edition: Record Attendance and Enhanced Experience

The 2024 edition surpassed all expectations, recording the largest audience turnout in its history. Despite the unprecedented attendance, the visitor experience was significantly improved thanks to a strategic expansion and redesign of the event spaces. Attendees were able to comfortably explore the vibrant culinary hub created in La Villa de Teguise.

Oswaldo Betancort, President of the Lanzarote Cabildo, highlighted the festival’s alignment with the island’s tourism strategy: “Once again, this international event proves to be a major attraction, not only for residents but also for the thousands of tourists who visit us.” He emphasized the focus on quality over quantity, noting a significant increase in the average visitor spending, underscoring the festival’s economic impact.

🇪🇸 The Essence of Saborea España

A key feature of the festival is its role as a gathering for the Saborea España network—a community of destinations committed to promoting Spanish cuisine as a driver of tourism and cultural preservation. Susi Díaz, President of Saborea España, attended to support the event, stating: “Saborea España is much more than a network of destinations; it is a community committed to the values our cuisine represents: sustainability, proximity, and excellence.”

The festival proudly hosted representatives from member destinations, each showcasing their regional identity:

  • Cambrils: Shared the fresh, vibrant flavors of the Mediterranean with seafood specialties.
  • Segovia: Presented its renowned roasted meats, highlighting the mastery of slow cooking traditions.
  • Valladolid: Showcased its creative pinchos, a fusion of tradition and culinary artistry.

The participation of organizations like Eurotoques, led by Mayre Modrego, further underscored the importance of professional collaboration in fostering creativity and innovation in Spanish cuisine.

🌋 Celebrating Volcanic Flavors and Local Innovation

As the host region, Lanzarote took center stage, promoting its unique, volcanic-born ingredients. Attendees celebrated the island’s finest producers of:

  • Malvasía Volcánica wines, known for their distinctive mineral character.
  • Majorero goat cheese, a true gastronomic treasure.
  • Sea salts, preserves, jams, vermouth, and gin.

The two-day event offered an immersive experience for food enthusiasts through showcookings, workshops, wine and food tastings, and panel discussions, creating a sensory journey that celebrated the past, present, and future of Spanish cuisine. Innovation was also spotlighted through major competitions, including the “Best Burger” Competition (won by Jimmy Roldán) and the traditional “Ensaladilla” Contest (championed by Siro Rivas). This commitment to quality and local identity is also proudly reflected in other island ventures, such as the unique apparel from LANZAWEAR, which allows visitors to take a piece of Lanzarote’s spirit home with them.

♻️ A Commitment to Sustainability and Inclusion

The 11th edition reinforced its core values by implementing a sustainability mapping initiative developed in collaboration with Taboire Sustainable Solutions. This analysis measures the environmental, social, and economic impact, driving continuous improvements like enhanced waste management and the promotion of sustainable materials.

Beyond the environmental focus, the festival prioritized social inclusion and safety with the introduction of:

  • “Punto Naranja” (Orange Point): Focused on ensuring accessibility for diverse audiences.
  • “Punto Violeta” (Purple Point): Dedicated to preventing gender-based violence and harassment.

By supporting local NGOs and promoting proximity-based consumption, Saborea Lanzarote strengthens its role as a driver of inclusive and regenerative development, proving that gastronomy not only unites people but also defines Spain as a diverse and high-quality culinary destination.
